Aunt Dove

Aunt Dove is a Pearl Girl missionary who, together with her partner Aunt Beatrice, operates in Toronto as part of Gilead's effort to recruit young women from outside its borders. She is a freckled redhead, and her demeanor is one of practiced, glassy kindness—a smiling, soft-spoken facade that conceals the coercive machinery of the regime she serves. Her role is to identify, groom, and transport vulnerable girls into Gilead, where they are stripped of their former identities and repurposed as Wives, Handmaids, or, in rare cases, Aunts. She is a key instrument in the operation that brings Daisy, the girl who will later be known as Baby Nicole, into Gilead under the false identity of Jade.

Appearance and Persona

Aunt Dove is described as having red hair, visible in wisps from under her white hat, and a freckled complexion. She wears the standard Pearl Girl uniform: a silvery grey dress with long skirts, a white collar, a white hat, and a string of fake pearls. Her smile is described as not a real smile—it is a fixed, professional expression, part of the uniform. She and Aunt Beatrice move in pairs, as all Pearl Girls do, and their manner is one of unctuous concern, offering brochures with titles like "There Is a Home in Gilead for You!" and speaking in a soft, soothing tone designed to disarm the desperate. She is, in every outward respect, the friendly face of a totalitarian state.

Recruitment of Daisy (Jade)

Aunt Dove first encounters Daisy on a Toronto street, where the girl is posing as a homeless runaway as part of a Mayday operation. Daisy is sitting against a wall in ragged clothes, with a cardboard sign reading "HOMELESS PLEASE HELP." Aunt Dove and Aunt Beatrice approach, offering brochures and asking her name. When Daisy says she is called Jade, Aunt Dove and her partner begin a slow, patient campaign of recruitment. They do not press too hard on the first meeting, allowing the girl to remain with her supposed boyfriend, Garth, who is actually a Mayday operative. On a subsequent encounter, when Garth briefly leaves to get food, they move in. Aunt Dove asks if the man hits her, if he makes her do "bad things"—a calculated appeal to a victim narrative. When Daisy nods, Aunt Dove offers a hug "on behalf of God" and tells her she is safe now. The Pearl Girls then buy Daisy from Garth for half the money he demands, a transaction that Aunt Dove later describes with contempt as proof of his worthlessness. She tells Daisy, "Filthy infidel," referring to Garth, and assures her that in Gilead, no man will ever be able to hurt her.

Role in the Conversion and Transport

Once Daisy is in their custody, Aunt Dove and Aunt Beatrice take her to their condo, where they provide her with a shower, a silvery grey Pearl Girl dress, and a fake pearl necklace. Aunt Dove explains that the dress is necessary for crossing the border, as the Canadian authorities are "clamping down on the export of underage converts." She and Aunt Beatrice arrange for Daisy to be issued a passport identifying her as Aunt Dove herself, a common practice of identity-switching among the Pearl Girls. Aunt Dove will remain in Canada, taking the name of an incoming Pearl Girl, while Daisy travels to Gilead under her identity. Aunt Dove laughs at the ease of the deception, saying, "The Canadians can't tell us apart. We all look the same to them." She also instructs Daisy on the rules of Gilead, telling her that leggings are men's clothing and an abomination, and that she must accept this if she wants to join. She is, in this way, a gatekeeper and a trainer, preparing the new recruit for the rigid gender roles of the regime.

Relationship to the Larger Gilead Apparatus

Aunt Dove is not a high-ranking Aunt; she is a Supplicant who has recently completed her Pearl Girls missionary work and is about to be elevated to full Aunt status. She is part of a system that Aunt Lydia herself designed and that Commander Judd officially controls. The Pearl Girls report to Aunt Lydia, but their day-to-day operations are carried out by women like Aunt Dove, who are trained to be observant, obedient, and persuasive. Aunt Dove is unaware of Daisy's true identity as Baby Nicole; she is following orders to look for a girl with a specific tattoo on her left forearm. She is a cog in a larger machine, but a necessary one—the smiling, gentle face that makes the machinery of abduction and indoctrination seem like rescue. Her final appearance in the narrative is at the Thanks Giving ceremony in Gilead, where she presents Jade as a "Pearl of Great Price" and is herself elevated to full Aunt status. She then fades from the story, her function complete.
